Analysing cracks on a 3D scan of surface (depthmap)

perspixe
Hello,

First I want to say sorry for my question that is not very specific about macros or anything like that.
I am looking to see if something I would like to do is feasible.
I ran in imageJ recently to raster some big ESRI dataset of the whole world, depth map of Altimetry and bathymetry.
That is basically all I know about imageJ, but from reading messages in this list I understand that something I wanted to do for a long time might be right at hand (surely not for my non-existent programming skills, though).
We have build a surface scanner that can scan a surface at 60-100 microns using laser line and 2 cameras.
So we end up with depth map of the surface. We use that on cultural heritage (paintings etc) for several purposes, making fac-simile but also giving conservators data to work on and analyze prior to restoration. See <http://www.factum-arte.com/eng/tech_3Dreconstruction.asp> for details.
My aim is to be able to analyze cracks in a surface and build reports about width of cracks and their length, so this data can be compared with future re-scans and see the evolution of these cracks under specific circumstances.
I guess this is a serious work to get to that.
The point of this message is to listen to people opinions and see if anyone can relate this to something else that could be used or modified to get to this.

Cheers
Greg
