Automatic segmentation on different scales

Hello everyone,

I'm currently trying to write a plugin for automatic segmentation of mciroCT
images, and part of that is finding radii and centers of more or less elliptical
shapes.  Currently I'm trying to do this by starting with the local maxima and
then continuing with the levelsets plugin
(http://pacific.mpi-cbg.de/wiki/index.php/Level_Sets), Fast Marching first,
Active Contours afterwards. The problem is, I can't find settings that work for
both very small (attachment: example_crosssections) and large structures
(two_circles_blurry).

If anyone has a great idea for this task, I'm open for discussions.
