maybe I already did something similar.
If you can create a binary mask where the curve you want to measure is
on the lower side, you can use parts of this macro toolset:
http://dev.mri.cnrs.fr/projects/imagej-macros/wiki/Skin_ToolsIt actually measures the interdigitation index, but it reports length
and distance as well. Right click on the i-button and set segments to
1. Load your mask and press the i button. You should get the length in
the "interdigitation indices" window.
Look at the above link for details.
To set the spacial scale (prior to the above procedure), make a line
selection of a known distance and run "Select Scale" from the
"Analyze" menu. Fill in the "known distance" and the "unit", the
"distance in pixels" will automatically be the length of the selection.
