Hello Bill,
I've been using ImageJ for over 2 years now, mostly to evaluate images
for image quality experiments with CMOS image sensors.
ImageJ doesn't have much support for color transformations, especially
to or from calibrated color, and nothing I'm aware of for CMYK color.
Most of what exists for ImageJ is in the Color section of the Plugins
page on the web site.
Mostly, I've used other software for color analysis. Sometimes I've
programmed my own transformation plugins, after splitting the color image
into an image stack of color channels. You can relatively easily write
plugins or macros to do the same.
Plugins I've found very useful (see the ImageJ Plugin page):
3D Color Inspector / Color Histogram
Ulf Dittmer 's Expression (applies math formulas to images).
Outside of ImageJ, I can recommend:
Imatest - image quality evaluation software
- commercial but not expensive
http://www.imatest.com/ ImageMagick - free, Open Source, command line driven
image transformation software, including to & from CMYK;
http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php VIPS image processing library - free GUI IP software
featuring calibrated color transforms, but much
harder to learn to use than ImageJ;
http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk/As you probably know, printing color space is highly non-linear.
This means that the simple linear transformations from RGB to and from
CMYK available in software like ImageMagick do not work well. That's
where the experimentation comes in, and the Expression Plugin may help.
Good luck.

needed and how to use them to assess an image in a way to contribute to the
development of an algorythm to determine the amount of (or rather
proportions of) cyan, magenta, yellow and black toner that would be used in
printing the image on a colour laser printer.
I don't know if this kind of question is allowed here. I would use the
information to assess print costs per page for each image assessed in this way.
