Concatenation of large TIFFs using virtual stacks

Is there a way to concatenate multiple large TIFF stacks using virtual stacks? I tried opening multiple tiff stacks as virtual files simultaneously and then do the concatenation but that caused me run out of memory.
I could open each tiff stack separately and do the analysis, but it would make my life far easier if I could use a single file.
