Coordinate transformations for display

I'm really enjoying getting to know ImageJ.  Good software!

I'm thinking about the best way to display coordinates in images that are
transformed from the pixels.  Analyze > Set Scale is part of this.  I'd like
to have separate scales for x and y so that I can read off values in two
different units.  Beyond that, I have data that are 2D arrays of pixels, but
the natural coordinates are polar, so I'm thinking that one would need to
provide the center in (x,y) and scales for r and theta.

How could this be achieved?  How much is currently there?  Should this be a
plugin?  If so, can a plugin "intercept" the display of coordinates and
values in the main ImageJ GUI window, and change the units and values?
