Detecting grain boundaries

bulba7
Hello All,

I have several ceramic microphotgraphs which I need to analyse in Imagej. I have to obtain informations like grain size, perimeter, mass center. With some of the pictures I used:
- find edges
- sharpen
- threshold
- make binary
- invert
- skeletonize
- dilate

Sometimes also variance filter was helpful.
Unfortunetly this methods (and any combination of them) don't work with 3-d microstructure photographs like this one:

I was hoping maybe someone could give me a hint which operations or which plugin should I use to get a good binary picture with visible grain boundaries. I don't have much experience in working with Imagej so any help would be great.

Thanks!

Paul
