Does anyone know how to calculate the spacing between cells as a gradient?

Hi guys,

I have several images of cell nuclei. The spacing between the cells changes from one side of the image to the other, so I am trying to figure out a way to calculate that "gradient". I've tried using the distance map under the binary menu but I didn't get good results. Any ideas? Does anyone know of some other way?
