Edge Detection algorithm

Can someone explain to me the edge detection algorithm for binary images?

I suppose there is some misunderstanding as the edge detection algorithm  
on binary images is akin to: start on background pixel and follow the  
given direction until you find a foreground pixel.
Maybe the sender intended grayscale images?
