Hi Kevin,
Note that in scientific images a selective enhancement is generally seen
extremely critical (actually is normally not accepted) and should only be
done if there is a good and reason for which you also can scientifically
justify in the methods part.
Having said this and since I do not know what exactly you need the
enhancement in a selection for, here one possibility how to achieve this.
When you create your freehand selection you can simply use the
Brightness/Contrast dialog and adjust you contrast as desired (equivalent
you could use the >Process >Enhance Contrast funtion (with the "update all
when normalizing" checkbox de-activated). If you hit the "Apply" button in
the Brightness/Contrast dialog the changes you made are only applied to
your selection and the rest is reset to original.
