Hello All,
I am new to the list and ImageJ. I am currently exploring the possibility of using ImageJ in my research and have some basic questions. In the past, I used the software Scion Image with a VG-5 Video Frame Grabber board produced by Scion Corporation. However, my grabber board has now failed. I have been unable to contact Scion Corporation for replacement and wonder if they are out of business? Does anyone know? My need is to link a microscope to a computer for image acquisition and analyses, principally counting and measuring the area of ca. hundreds of microfossils per sample (i.e. scan a sample under the microscope with the live image displayed on the computer, capture image when fossils spotted, measure areas of fossils plus other metrics like length and width, restart scanning and repeat). I believe that ImageJ could easily meet these demands, correct? If so, can anyone recommend a reliable and affordable grabber board that can be used with ImageJ. Many thanks in advance. Kendrick. |
Dear Kendrick,
Scion Corp, are no longer trading. I enclose an email from Thomas Morton of Scion below. I presume given your request is for a frame grabber that you already have a video camera attached to your microscope? You may however (depending on the type of camera you are after), be better served by looking at one of the many USB or firewire cameras that are available and thus avoid having to install a card into your computer. My experience has been that there has been far fewer interface issues with cameras connected in this way. Also camera technology moves on a pace! You may also want to take a look at MicroManager (http://valelab.ucsf.edu/~MM/MMwiki/index.php/Micro-Manager_ I'm currently working on a proprietary application SmartCapture 4, (it work with or without ImageJ) for microscope control and image acquisition with an emphasis on ease of use (think of it as power steering and cruise control for micrscopists :-) But this is not planned for release until Q3 2011.
