We find it useful to characterize the interlamellar spacing distriburion by producing binary images of the lamellas by automatic local thresholding ( download plugin
http://www.dentistry.bham.ac.uk/landinig/software/auto_threshold.jar ). You may first want to apply an edge-preserving smoothing filter due to the somewhat noisy character of the SEM images. Next, the lamella ridges (center line) can be extracted by simple skeletonizing or by Euclidian distance methods. Finally, the distances can be measured automatically by e.g. the local thickness circle fitting method (
http://www.optinav.com/Local_Thickness.htm ) or by applying semi-automatic linear intercept methods.

Subject: Fwd: determining the size of phases in metallic micrographs
Hello
I am currently working on defining the distance between parallel areas of different phases. I was wondering if there is any plugins that will help with this. The areas are of the scale of microns but have a definite contrast change between each of the phases (I have attached a general image of what it looks like). I need to be able to define the size of these phases relative to the scale bar. Preferable I would need to know the average distance between the centre of one phase to the centre of another one.
