How can I highlight small intensity differences?

I'm very new to ImageJ and Fiji. Is there a way to highlight or color areas
where there are small differences

in intensity in a 16 bit .FIT  monochrome image?  These variations are
probably too small to see with the naked eye.

I am thinking of making all pixels that are different from their neighbors
in the X axis by  a range (say >2 and <12)

a certain color and (say >15 and <25) another color, etc.

Or maybe some other method to achieve a similar way of calling attention to
these differences to see if there

exists a pattern in the image that is not seen.

Try using one of the lookup tables in the Image>Lookup Tables menu with the image and increasing the contrast by repeatedly clicking on “Auto” button in the Image>Adjust>Brightness/Contrast dialog. If you are running Mac OS, you will need to upgrade to the latest daily build (1.51q26), which fixes a regression that caused the “Auto” button to not increase contrast with each repeated click. You can upgrade by using the Help>Update ImageJ command and selecting “daily build” from the drop down menu.
