I have just installed openSUSE 11.1 in a desktop and noticed that ImageJ 1.42e
is available in the one of the repositories. ImageJA is also there and is reported to be 1.42e. I haven't installed these because I already had the old install in the /home partition. Here is the information: ----- ImageJ - ImageJ - Image processing and analysis in Java Version: 1.42e-0.pm.1 Build Time: Thu 18 Dec 2008 17:12:33 GMT Package Group: Productivity/Graphics/Convertors License: Public Domain Installed Size: 1.3 M Download Size: 1.2 M Distribution: Vendor: packman.links2linux.de Packager: Toni Graffy <[hidden email]> Architecture: noarch Build Host: URL: http://rsbweb.nih.gov/ij/index.html Media No.: 0 Authors: ----- Cheers Gabriel |

Hi Gabriel,
When you say you have an old install in /home you mean it was installed directly from the ImageJ website? It's typically much better to install the package adapted for your distribution, so as to have the installed files under control by your package management system. At the least you eliminate redundant programs being installed (using the OpenSuse version would upgrade/use your existing Java installation) and at most it would prevent file collisions which would affect the operation of other programs on the machine (not in this case though since you installed to /home). Yes, I have a local install which was preserved from the previous suse 11.0 install. > It's typically much better to install the package adapted for your > distribution, so as to have the installed files under control by your > package management system. Maybe for packages that get updated via yast, but not for IJ. > At the least you eliminate redundant programs being installed (using > the OpenSuse version would upgrade/use your existing Java > installation) and at most it would prevent file collisions which would > affect the operation of other programs on the machine (not in this > case though since you installed to /home). But that does not really apply to IJ. There are no "redundant" programs, the Java install I use is the system one, managed by yast. Cheers G. |
