The subject covers it. I am running the
most current ImageJ on Ubuntu (Hardy). When I use ImageJ and have several windows open I am unable to switch between virtual desktops with the pager. Also I am unable to launch any programs by clicking on the icon on the toolbar. Applets such as the calendar/clock are also in-accessible. Switching desktops with the keyboard still works. Focus still follows my mouse. I have not been able to tie this to any specific action or sequence of actions, but it is common enough for others to have seen it, I think. My system is x86_64. BTW, ImageJ runs fine, it is just that I lose control of my desktop. I have googled for this and found nothing. I have looked in the Xorg log file and found nothing. If no one here has seen this, I guess I will ask next on an Ubuntu list. Thanks, Ray |

It would be worth investigating messages from gnome-panel at the time of launching and running ImageJ Unfortunately I'm an XFCE user, so I wouldn't be able to recommend where to look :) I can't find where gnome-panel would log messages to. But in the context of this mailing list, perhaps we can look closely at the ImageJ version you are using, the JRE used to compile / run it and events that prompt this lock up to happen. > The subject covers it. If so can you verify which version of JRE it uses? Also does it happen with earlier versions of ImageJ? > I have not been able to tie this to any > specific action or sequence of actions, > but it is common enough for others to > have seen it, I think. > So it does not happen immediately, but over the course of time? > My system is x86_64. > > BTW, ImageJ runs fine, it is just that I > lose control of my desktop. > > I have googled for this and found nothing. > I have looked in the Xorg log file and > found nothing. Pariksheet,
Thanks for the reply. A few days past, I was able to to find a work-around. I would have followed up my own post but as there were no replies in a week, I assumed (incorrectly) that the thread was dead. Succinctly, the problem has nothing to do with ImageJ. I was seeing it only with ImageJ because that is the only way I normally come to have more than 7 windows open at once. It is a Gnome bug. When one uses a vertical panel, the bug is triggered on creation of the 8th window. I have re-configured my desktop and moved on. For a detailed explanation see Bug #187540 in Launchpad.
