ImageJ locks up gnome-panel on Ubuntu

Raymond Lillard
The subject covers it.  I am running the
most current ImageJ on Ubuntu (Hardy).
When I use ImageJ and have several windows
open I am unable to switch between virtual
desktops with the pager.  Also I am unable
to launch any programs by clicking on the
icon on the toolbar.  Applets such as the
calendar/clock are also in-accessible.

Switching desktops with the keyboard still
works.  Focus still follows my mouse.

I have not been able to tie this to any
specific action or sequence of actions,
but it is common enough for others to
have seen it, I think.

My system is x86_64.

BTW, ImageJ runs fine, it is just that I
lose control of my desktop.

I have googled for this and found nothing.
I have looked in the Xorg log file and
found nothing.  If no one here has seen
this, I guess I will ask next on an Ubuntu
list.

Thanks,
Ray

It would be worth investigating messages from gnome-panel at the time
of launching and running ImageJ
Unfortunately I'm an XFCE user, so I wouldn't be able to recommend
where to look :)
I can't find where gnome-panel would log messages to.

But in the context of this mailing list, perhaps we can look closely
at the ImageJ version you are using, the JRE used to compile / run it
and events that prompt this lock up to happen.

You mean the most current release from the ImageJ v.1.40 from the website?
http://rsbweb.nih.gov/ij/download/
...or the most current ImageJ in Ubuntu's package manager?
If so can you verify which version of JRE it uses?

Also does it happen with earlier versions of ImageJ?

So it does not happen immediately, but over the course of time?

I didn't have much luck either searching on Gnome's bugzilla with
Product = "gnome-panel"
Status = (shift +select all)
Summary = freezes, freeze, lock, locks

Re: ImageJ locks up gnome-panel on Ubuntu

Pariksheet,

Thanks for the reply.  A few days past, I was able to
to find a work-around.  I would have followed up my own
post but as there were no replies in a week, I assumed
(incorrectly) that the thread was dead.

Succinctly, the problem has nothing to do with ImageJ.
I was seeing it only with ImageJ because that is the
only way I normally come to have more than 7 windows
open at once.

It is a Gnome bug.  When one uses a vertical panel,
the bug is triggered on creation of the 8th window.
I have re-configured my desktop and moved on.

For a detailed explanation see Bug #187540 in Launchpad.

Regards,
Ray
