Imagej quits unexpectedly when opening GEL files

I have imagej 1.45c installed on a MacBook Pro under Snow Leopard 10.6.6 running Java 13.4.4. ImageJ and image64 load just fine and the LSM reader plugin loads my LSM stacks just fine. However, I can no longer load .gel files (from Typhoon scanner) - ImageJ just quits. Is there a simple fix for this problem?
