Measuring lateral growth rate

Hello,

I have a time series of 2D images recording the lateral growth of a
crystal. What would be the easiest way to obtain the lateral growth rate
along a given transect? In other words, I would like to be able to draw a
line across the crystal, and obtain the position of the edge of the crystal
along this line with time.
