In a framework of 10 Integrated Projects (IPs) scientists address key environmental challenges following a solution-oriented approach. In order to strengthen its interdisciplinary work, UFZ is currently offering 12 PhD positions. One position will be dedicated to the following subject:

Subject: Smart sensor and data technologies to test mechanisms of plant community response to global change
Project start: 1st July 2017, working time 50% (19,5 h/week); limited for three years
Your tasks:
This PhD project will test smart sensor technologies as a tool to understand the mechanisms underlying plant community responses to global change. Therefore, established experimental infrastructure manipulating global change factors (climate, nitrogen) will be used, and novel sensor technology will be employed, to explore the role of non-linearity and thresholds in ecosystem responses to environmental drivers. Combining this data-driven approach with modelling will open new opportunities to evaluate changes in plant growth and the interaction between biotic and abiotic processes.
