Re: TWAIN or JTwain from IMAGEJ Digest - 20 Jun 2006 to 21 Jun 20 06 (#2006-169)

Heeschen, Bill (WA)
I ended up buying JTwain because it seemed to be a bit simpler to set up and support (my opinion).  I did not rigorously evaluate GNOME's TWAIN vs Asprise's JTwain, so no comment on comparative usefulness.    It looked to me that both packages handled the TWAIN protocol OK.  It took me a few tries to figure out the right location for the JTwainLicense.class file.  Fortunately Wayne got me going in the right direction - as usual ;-)    The important thing was to add the license class file (JTwainLicense.class) to the JTwain.jar file.   It is now working nicely.

I think the bigger issue is that JTwain is - to the best of my knowledge - Windows-only software.  GNOME's TWAIN software is available for MacOS X, as well, so that might be a potential bridge into Linux, but nothing on their website indicates that they support anything other than Windows and MacOS X.

Now my greatest frustration is the vendors' implementations of the TWAIN interface - not all TWAIN implementations are created equal...  or complete!

Good luck and Best Regards,
Bill

Subject: Twain or JTwain?

What is the difference between these two plugins? Is one more advantageous than the other? Is it possible to use one in Linux for Twain compatible devices?

Thanks, Andy
