Re: ? of compatability of camera with ImageJ software

Jeffrey S. Putter, M.D.
Dear Members:

My inquiry relates to whether the anticipated purchase of the following camera

through Optronics/Olympus for phase contrast microscopy

would be compatabile with the ImageJ software.

The camera specifications are:

OMICROFR

S99809:MICROFIRE DIGITAL COLOR  CAMERA, 2MPIXEL, FIREW

OPTRONIC

Price: $5520.75 before tax inclusive of a 15% discount

The file formats are: tiff, jpg, and bmp
Microscope: Olympus CX41 RF-5
Problem: the blood storage lesion
Specimen: refrigerated live red blood cells (RBCs)
Microscopy: study of RBC morphology inclusive of cell perimeters
areas, and form factors.

Thank you.

Cordially,

I think this is a bit expensive for a 2MPixel firewire camera.
Is this camera special in any sense?

In the UK you can buy a QImaging 3.3 MPixel for less than that, and it has a
(not that great) plugin that works in IJ for Win 2000/XP.
Support for IJ in linux (as far as I know) is inexistent for any camera I have
been able to find (to manufacturers: hint, hint!).

I suggest to do a bit of research in the IJ site and see what cameras are
already supported in IJ.

It also may be useful to find out what the camera manufacturer policy is
regarding "hot pixels", so you are not disappointed if you find that there
are too many "bright (hot) pixels" in the images.

Cheers,

G.

Thank you for the input from Gabriel Landini, which is quite productive
for me. I shall scrutinize the ImageJ site for potential compatible cameras
to
ImageJ software. I did not know about the hot pixel problem and will
inquire.
Regarding the QImaging 3.3 MPixel camera, what was the nature of
your problem with the plugin? As cost and budget for the camera are
clearly important, I shall review this matter further with my blood
component
research collaborator in London, UK. We know the exchange rates between
the USA and Canada and can compare prices.

Cheers,

Dr. Putter

This was discussed recently; it is not a problem, it's just not as good as it
could/should be.
The shortcomings I mention below may put some people off, depending on how
they may expect to use the camera.

https://list.nih.gov/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0611&L=imagej&H=1&O=A&P=18622

https://list.nih.gov/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0611&L=imagej&H=1&O=A&P=19147

I, particularly, would like to 1) control the image snapshot function from a
plugin or a macro, and also 2) be able to grab averaged frames from within
IJ.

QImaging are aware of this wishlist and I offered to test it if required, but
I am not sure how keen are they are to implement these.
In fairness, they resolved one problem I found (it rescaled automatically the
contrast range, making impossible to do ratio image background correction),
so there is always hope that they will come up with those improvements.

Regards,

Gabriel
