Tooltips/Hover box with AWT components?

Hi ImageJ/Java experts,

is there a way to have a hover box or tooltips if one moves the mouse  
above an AWT (not swing) component?
The only possibility I see is the 'pedestrian' way of analyzing the  
mouse events and the timing to trigger the hover box, and then  
opening/closing a new window (frame). But that's not very elegant...
