TraKEM: what does the upper bound surface exactly calculate?

Hi TrakEM users,
I've been reading the TrakEM2 manual, and it's not clear to me what exactly
the upper bound surface measures.
According to the reported formula, it should be just the lateral surface of
the segmented 3D element within a section, since the top and bottom areas
are not included in the formula, is that right?
Should I then manually add the top and the bottom areas if I want the total
surface area of my segmented element or is there a different way to get
this?
