User Guide web page freezes - JavaScript error

Michael Doube-4
Loading the User Guide with Firefox 21 is very slow and pops up lots of warnings like this one:

------------------------
A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: http://imagej.nih.gov/ij/docs/guide/js/searchhi.js:9
------------------------

I'm currently on Windows 7, but I'm sure I've seen the same error on other browser versions and OSes.

Can anyone confirm?

Michael

Yes, I have encountered the same issue using Firefox, but on a PC running Windows XP.

Seems like it's fixed in Firefox 23.0.1 (just updated) and is OK in Chrome on Win 7.

Actually, I still get this on Firefox 23, Ubuntu 12.04, but Chrome on Ubuntu seems OK.

I confirm it, also on Firefox 24. It even brought the browser to a complete halt.

But it only happens when you go to the guide through a search engine such as google. the
script won't run if you use a direct link such as http://imagej.nih.gov/ij/docs/guide/

That script is only meant to automatically highlight the search terms used on the search
engine. E.g.: If you google "imagej guide background", and if you follow the first hit,
you should see those words highlighted on section 29 of the guide...

Is anyone using this feature? Would it be missed if it ought to be disabled?

I'm guessing something changed on google's syntax or somehow the script became deprecated.
Meanwhile, if you have the "NoScript" add-on you can try the following [1]:

- Go to the NoScript options (Tools>Add-ons..., then extensions tab, then Preferences...)
- Go to Advanced tab. In that page, go to ABE tab. Under Rulesets, click on USER. Then
paste the following in the textbox on the right:
 ####
 # User-defined rules. Feel free to experiment here.
 Site http://imagej.nih.gov/ij/docs/guide/js/searchhi.js*
 Deny
 ####

I will try to have a look at it, later this week,

Agreed. Looked indeed a feature from the nineties :)
It has been disabled... Should work fine now.
[But it could be that you may need to reset the browser's cache]
