Dear ImageJ users, I have recently upgraded my laptop and now have Win 8.1. There are so many changes I have not been able to setup ImageJ/Fiji properly. For example, I normally associate file extensions such as tif with Fiji. I have done this but when a tif is double clicked, Fiji opens but not the image. Are there any tricks to setup Fiji properly and file associations so that it works as previously in Win 7? regards Trevor -- DR TREVOR WARDILL (BBSRC David Phillips Fellow) Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience Physiology Building, University of Cambridge Downing Street, Cambridge, CB2 3EG (M): 07914 945 555 (W): 01223 746 919 [hidden email] -- ImageJ mailing list: http://imagej.nih.gov/ij/list.html |

Hi Trevor,
> when a tif is double clicked, > Fiji opens but not the image. The issue is not Windows 8, but rather a bug in recent versions of Fiji. Until we fix it, you can try the Life-Line version, which should not exhibit the problem. Regards, Curtis On Sep 27, 2014 3:30 PM, "T.J. Garbage in - garbage out :) After Curtis's post, I tried a .tif saved from GIMP and had same problem as OP. It seems that Fiji can still read it's own newly saved .tifs, [and encouragingly] the GIMP can ALSO read Fiji's newly saved .tif. Fiji just behaves badly way with "some" (probably standard) .tifs, like those saved by the GIMP. This begs the question, are Fiji-saved .tifs reliable input for most other programs pending the fix? -- ImageJ mailing list: http://imagej.nih.gov/ij/list.html |
Hi Robert & everyone,
> This begs the question, are Fiji-saved .tifs reliable input for most > other programs pending the fix? TIFF files saved using Fiji should be valid. I'm not sure why you see any difference with TIFFs saved in Fiji vs. other software. The bug is a blanket problem opening any files passed as parameters. FWIW, the issue tracking this problem is at: https://github.com/imagej/imagej-legacy/issues/89 Regards, Curtis On Sat, Sep 27, 2014 at 4:44 PM, Robert Baer <[hidden email]> wrote: > when a tif is double clicked, Fiji opens but not the image. > >> The issue is not Windows 8, but rather a bug in recent versions of Fiji. >> Until we fix it, you can try the Life-Line version, which should not >> exhibit the problem. >> >> Regards, >> Curtis >> > Interestingly, I tried my windows 8 instructions by creating an > embryos.tif from the Fiji sample in Fiji on Windows 8 and the instructions > worked fine with this test. A .tif file produced with the GIMP, however, seems to produce a 4 channel composite image when dragged onto the Fiji icon. If this 4th channel is checked it acts like an alpha channel that is masking the 3 color channels. The result is an empty image frame. The GIMP image does display correctly if the 3 color channels (1-3) are checked and the fourth channel is unchecked. Not knowing the details of .tif format importer, I leave this behavioral clue to those who are more knowledgeable.
