Virtual Stack Opener plugin and changing contrast

Jan Stuehmer
Hi all,

we would like to use the Virtual Stack Opener plugin to view big
microscope data sets because the dataset is too big to load it into
memory completely.

To inspect the files, the contrast needs to be changed. Unfortunately
the plugin doesn't allow to edit files and changes are not saved as soon
as another slice of the stack is selected. So each slice has the
original contrast again, when another slice was viewed in between.

Also ImageJ doesn't change show the new selected slice with the choses
contrast, even if the brightness and contrast dialog is left open.

Has anyone a suggestion how to deal with this?
Either each slice needs to be saved back to disk before the next slice
is loaded or the selected contrast should be used for every slice that
is shown.

Thank you and regards,

This is a difficult problem, but I have a plan to deal with it in
LOCI's "4D Data Browser" plugin
(http://www.loci.wisc.edu/ome/browser.html), which has similar
functionality to the Virtual Stack Opener.

The plan is to automatically record operations the user performs as
macro commands, similar to how the Macro Recorder shows them. Then,
when a new slice is loaded from disk, transparently apply the recorded
macro to the new slice. Further operations continue to be recorded and
are appended to this "automatic" macro. From the user's perspective,
it will seem as though everything is working normally, at least for
fast operations. For slower ones, there will be a decrease in
performance as new slices are loaded from disk.

Unfortunately, I have not had time to thoroughly implement this idea
yet, and cannot say when I will be able to do so. But a future version
of the 4D Data Browser will have some way of dealing with this
problem.

If anyone has any further thoughts or comments on this idea, I welcome them.
