What Is Shou Sugi Ban Accoya, and How Is It Made?

Shou Sugi Ban Accoya kind of merges a classic Japanese wood charring method with the top level performance you get from Accoya timber, and somehow it just works. Shou Sugi Ban, or Yakisugi as it s also called, means you carefully char the wood surface, so the finish turns into this deep dark, rough looking texture, it really brings out the wood’s natural grain.

Accoya timber on its own is modified in a special way, so you end up with great dimensional stability and long term durability, which makes it a solid choice for loads of exterior uses. And when Accoya gets a Shou Sugi Ban finish, the boards take on this dramatic visual style while still holding onto the strong performance traits of the original timber.

Usually the method goes like this: first the Accoya boards are prepped, then the surface is carefully charred to get the texture and look you want, and after that the timber is treated again based on where it will be used. The exact treatment can shift a bit depending on the project design needs or the overall architectural intent.

At Inflamed, Shou Sugi Ban Accoya is basically the ideal meeting place between traditional craft, modern timber technology, and today’s architectural sensibility, without losing that handcrafted feel.
