gmane and privacy issues

Gabriel Landini
Hello,
I just discovered that this list is mirrored by a gmane server

news.gmane.org

in the group:

gmane.comp.java.imagej

While the list handled at the NIH server deals nicely with privacy by removing
the mail addresses in the archive, the gmail server does not.

I do have a problem with this, not because of the traffic, but because
broadcasting email addresses this way is asking for more spam.

Apparently mailing lists can refuse Gmane entry:
http://gmane.org/about.php

What do others think of this?

Regards,

Gabriel

I actually like the gmane interface much better than the official archive,
so it would be quite sad if that went away.

However, I thought that the true addresses are only shown using tricks?

Unfortunately not. Using knode as a news server or just browsing with
konqueror or firefox:

http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.imagej

the addresses are not hidden.

Other groups do have some type of concealed addresses (not showing after
the "@" and if you click then it shows a captcha-style...

As I said I do not mind the traffic/content, but I do mind spammer harvesting
email addresses.

Cheers,

Gabriel

I found that by adding a X-Archive: header with a value of "encrypt" the email
address should be obfuscated at the Gmane site.
(I am trying this now).

There is also a setting that can be done from the mail server, which I already
passed to Wayne for consideration.
