The following steps should do what you want:
* Create a selection on your 8-bit b/w binary image
(Edit->Selection->Create Selection)
* Switch to the 32-bit image that contains the area you want to copy
* Restore your selection (Edit->Selection->Restore Selection)
* Copy
* Switch to the 32-bit image target image
* Paste
'Paste Control ...' in the Edit menu controls the paste mode. Transfer
mode 'Copy' should do what you want.
