Michael, you were right on both accounts.
The View5DImageJ collection of plugins defines a ImageCanvas class.
After removing it from my plugins folder, the problem went away.
Restoring View5DImageJ plugins and making the edit you suggested in
Grid_Overlay.java fixed the problem as well.
