sorry that I jumped the gun - I have found a solution. Simply have Photo Booth running, with the iSight camera selected. Then start ImageJ and go File, Import, Video.
Voila, microscope!
The iSight camera is busy, so ImageJ goes to the USB camera.
I got this idea from someone named Ken Aspeslagh.
