What model scanner are you getting these files from?
I suspect its a VISION or IMPACT. in which case these may be
SPI files or the internal Siemens fromat both described on David
CLunies Web site
I have a VISION and can do some test for you.
Its always easier to get the scanner to export DICOM format files
