other functions while using cell counter

can anyone tell me how I can select part of my image, zoom into it, and use the cell counter? Once I initialize the image for cell counter, I can't turn off the count function, so I can only use the menu (non-mouse) zoom, which doesn't allow me to zoom  on to parts toward the edges of the image. It just keeps adding counting dots when I click anywhere on the image, even if the toolbar indicates select or zoom.
