Try converting your black and white images to 8-bit first before saving as a .tiff file (or a jpeg file, but .tiff is preferred since there is no compression of the image information.). If you have colour, convert to RGB colour or 8-bit colour and then save as before. You should be able to open these images in programs such as Adobe illustrator. Be sure to save new copies of your images instead of overwriting the originals.
