I have to make here two corrections:

first - unintentional overwriting (e.g. of "pic-24" in my case study) indeed only occurs when using the minus sign, not with the underscore as I wrote- sorry for this mistake. I am using minus signs all the day in file names and obviously have become a special victim.

second - I expected that getTitle() and getInfo("image.filename") should be the same (as in most applications), but ImageJ obviously allows the file name to be different from the image title,  thus it neither is nor was a bug.
