compressing avi files

For some projects I make screencasts with sound of ca. 3 minutes (using "IShowU HD" on OS X) that accompany the documentation. Then I use "Stomp" to compress such a movie to about 8 MB. However, many PCs refuse these .mov files because Quicktime is not installed. But when saving as .avi, the size becomes 60 MB. Well I admit that this is a bit off-topic, but can anyone give advice how to get the same compression level for .avi files?
