an alternative would be to put something bright blue etc. behind the hole (it is hole? i haven't a clue what that's a photo of). Then write a little program to count the number of pixels which are very blue but low red and low green (might need some calibration to check your settings don't produce false positives; maybe you could only count those pixels which have a blue pixel on at least 2 sides of them to reduce the false+). Of course that'd give you pixel numbers rather than an absolute size.
