This sounds similar to problems we've had under OpenJDK.  Their
implementation of awt isn't exactly the same as Sun's.  Another example
was using the JFreeChart library and passing Double.infinity to
something that eventually calls awt Rectangle().  Works under OJDK but
not Sun.  We've decided to just not use OpenJDK.  We run Suse 11 but I
image you can use the "alternatives" command to set which java to use,
Sun's is probably there too.
