Handling Hyperstacks

I'm new to programming imageJ plugins and I'm trying to handle hyperstacks. I can't find any documentation to the structure of hyperstacks - how the channels, time series, and z series are all stored. I know that this is very basic, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
