I've been corresponding with Daniel Lelis Baggio, the developer of Live Wire about my inability to get it to work and he figured out the problem.

I had installed the ImageJ version that comes bundled with java and Livewire was trying to use that version of java rather than the other (newer; updated) version I had also installed in the system. Once I downloaded the No-Java imagej package, LiveWire works perfectly and it will be very useful for what I'm doing.
