Stereology

Dear all,
I would like to perform stereological analysis to estimate the surface  
area to volume ratio of objects; I know there are grid plug-ins  
available, however the type of grid I would like is of short line  
segments of known length across the image; preferably in a repeating  
horizontal manner. Does anyone know if such a plug-in is available. If  
there is not one available, I am afraid I have an appalling knowledge  
of programming and was wondering where I might be able to get advice  
on how one can be created?
