Thanks Wayne!

Of course that works and I understand that white at least for 32-bit
images needs to be defined -- what about 1? Indeed 1 results from
inverting a black 32-bit image...

It is mainly the inconsistency (8- versus 16/32-bit) and not that I
can't circumvent it.
