Adam,
You can do this in several steps --It's a bit kludgy, but it will
work.
Once you have set your thresholds and obtained the Analyze Particles
image,
1. Remove the threshold color from your original 8-bit image by
selecting the grays lut.
2. Convert the outline image into a gray scale by selecting that
same lut.
3. If you want the outlines to be white, invert the image
(Edit>invert) (this does not turn the image upside down, it reverses
the lut) If you want the outines to be black, do nothing.
4. Select the outline image. I generally use ctl-A,
5. Copy the outline image. I generally use ctl-C
6. Paste the outline image on your original.
Horrors! --it seems to have simply covered the original. Now, in the
Edit menu, there is an item called "paste control". If you click on
it, you will see many options. You can "blend" the two images --
rather like photoshop- or you can make either black or white
transparent. Play around with these and see what you like.
Then, you can save the resulting image.
