ImageJ locks up gnome-panel on Ubuntu

The subject covers it. I am running the
most current ImageJ on Ubuntu (Hardy).
When I use ImageJ and have several windows
open I am unable to switch between virtual
desktops with the pager. Also I am unable
to launch any programs by clicking on the
icon on the toolbar. Applets such as the
calendar/clock are also in-accessible.
Switching desktops with the keyboard still
works. Focus still follows my mouse.
I have not been able to tie this to any
specific action or sequence of actions,
but it is common enough for others to
have seen it, I think.
My system is x86_64.
BTW, ImageJ runs fine, it is just that I
lose control of my desktop.
I have googled for this and found nothing.
I have looked in the Xorg log file and
found nothing. If no one here has seen
this, I guess I will ask next on an Ubuntu
list.
Thanks,
Ray
