That's the main window, if you are using OSX you should use the menubar (on
top) to perform actions (open files,...).
You can also use the default shorcuts (
http://imagejdocu.tudor.lu/imagej-documentation-wiki/keyboard-shortcuts/built-in-shortcuts).

Anyway, I think it will be better for you if you first try the binary
release of ImageJ.
