Just a quick thought: In case your PDFs were originally created with Adobe Photoshop (as "Photoshop PDF"), then Photoshop may be able to open them without rasterizing the images again - which would certainly be an advantage. To find out I would check the document properties with Acrobat.

Jay,

besides using the Gimp you can also extract images from .pdf files
with 'pdfimages'. On your linux system, try 'whereis pdfimages':
on mine it's in /usr/bin/pdfimages. To see how to use it do
'man <pdfimages', as always.
