Threshold auto

Hello,

Anybody can tell me how IJ to get the value(min, max) of threshold auto ?
 
Currently I am measuring the stained area in the image. If using threshold auto, it seems apparently lossing some pixels. If using threshold adjustment even based on histogram, it involes some personlized error. It will be very helpful if anyone can tell me how Threshold Auto works (algorithm).
