Extracting compressed plugin files on a Mac..

I am new to Macs and Image J ( a double whammy)... I
haven't been able to extract any compressed plugin
files on my Mac. I am clicking on Finder > and double
clicking on compressed file > this should open the
file but it is not.
If there are any Mac users out there... a quick reply
would be appreciated.
