Hi list,
funny, this seems to really be a true automatic implementation of what this
guy was already (mostly) joking about: for now some time:

Hello everyone-
"Seam Carving" (also known as "content-aware image resizing") is an
image manipulation technique for resizing images by removing image
content that contributes little to image appearance. Thus more image
features are preserved compared to cropping or scaling.
I can't properly describe it here, but you can find a paper and an
amazing video (that you should watch even if you have no further
interest in this subject) at
http://www.faculty.idc.ac.il/arik/.
I've adapted seam carving code by Mathias Lux for an ImageJ plugin,
which you can download at
http://www.ulfdittmer.com/imagej/. Let me
know if you have any questions (although I'm no expert on the theory).
Cheers,
Ulf
