How to measure the length of lines

Hi everybody,

here is my probleme. I've got several pictures (acutally that does not
matter, just to point out that I do have to do this task quiet often)
that show lines of different length and thickness. Now I am looking for
a plugin that measures all lines in one picture and gives me their
length and the mean length.

All lines are more or less orientated in x-direction (from the left side
to the right side).
